Lakeside Community Theatre has been running Colony since 2001 with various theatre productions and exists solely for charitable, artistic and educational purposes. The Lakesides Arts Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the community through the arts, including the development and promotion of visual arts in Colony through its annual Colony Arts Festival and other arts events in September and October.
Colony is known for its five-star athletics complex, which was completed in 2003 and is also known as the "Sports City of the United States" by Sports Illustrated. Although the colony itself was only founded as a community in the 1970s, the area is incredibly rich in Texas history. The State of Texas was admitted to the Union on December 29, 1845, and the collection offers researchers, genealogists, or the public the opportunity to access the largest collection of historical records in the state's history, as well as the history of Denton County. American history and focuses on the areas in southeast Dallas County that are now Colony.
Before the opening this spring, the city's only upscale hotel was a graceful Spanish inn designed in the 1930s by El Paso architect Henry Trost, where actors James Cagney, John Travolta, and Robert De Niro stayed more than 50 years ago during the making of "The Giant."
The colony is an all-in-one getaway, where retail therapy is as much a part of the experience as escaping into the great outdoors. The colony's outpost, located on the eastern shore of Lewisville Lake, opened in 2015 with the opening of a new truck yard, which opened in 2016 with an announcement from Houston. Located on the remote Colony Peninsula, a quiet lakeside community surrounded by a 23-mile stretch of Lake Lewis, the Tribute is within walking distance of the University of Texas at El Paso and Texas A & M University. Given Colony's proximity to major Texas cities, it's easy to say that any educational opportunity you want is a short drive from home.
